Senior Research Engineer

The Role
The Senior Research Engineer is responsible for initiating, creating, executing, and documenting experiments aimed at extending and improving results in both hardware and algorithms. You will work to design and execute experiments to test potential algorithms, hardware, software, or externally-supplied tools. You will also participate in data collection and laboratory work at Alitheon facilities and in-field experiments.

You will need to have excellent communication skills and the ability to translate data and findings into written presentations and working code. You will also act as a liaison with other teams to collaborate and coordinate research efforts as well as assist research efforts in obtaining patents for concepts and technologies.

This role is expected to work on multiple or overlapping projects and report to the Director of Research.

You will be asked to take on some big challenges. Specifically, you’ll invest your time in these key areas:

  • Conceive, design, and run laboratory experiments extending and improving algorithms and hardware
  • Maintain the Research lab and direct laboratory technicians where appropriate
  • Keep records and ensure the documentation of experimental results
  • Contribute to selection of production hardware where appropriate
  • Work with other team members to pursue patentability of appropriate technology
  • Instrument and analyze possible algorithmic issues
  • Acquire external hardware and associated software knowledge in relevant fields, including machine vision, machine perception, neural networks, and deep learning
  • Attend industry conferences, and keep up with industry journals and online discussions in relevant fields
  • Contribute to the ongoing education of Alitheon personnel through internal tech talks, brown-bag lunch presentations, and ad-hoc meetings

Must haves:

  • Background in electro-mechanical engineering, optics, machine learning, or related fields
  • Experience in creating and operating test fixtures in a laboratory setting
  • Coding ability and experience related to design and operation of experimental equipment for testing of algorithms
  • Excellent communication skills for reporting results to stakeholders
  • Dedication to continuing education in the fields of machine vision and machine perception, ANN, and deep learning

Travel Requirements
There is the potential to occasionally travel inside the US when we deploy at client sites, however, this position is not expected to travel often.
